Even though braces are designed to be stable and sturdy, they are also tools that should always be treated with as much care as possible no matter what.
After your dentist finishes applying the braces to your teeth, they will make many different recommendations to you. One of those recommendations will involve exactly what kind of foods that you should eat while you wear them.
Soft Foods For Braces
So exactly what kind of foods should you consume while you wear your braces? The simple answer to this question is that you should eat soft foods for your braces, as these will be much more gentle on the wires and brackets that hold everything in place and together.
Softer foods1 are generally easier on all of the hardware that is in your mouth. These kinds of foods include the following:
- Fruits (oranges, bananas, grapefruits, etc.)
- Seafood (tuna, salmon, etc.)
However, while there are foods that are great to enjoy while wearing braces, there are foods that you should also completely avoid while wearing braces. Typically, these foods are sticky, crunchy, and gooey, and they can cause a great deal of damage to your braces. These are also foods that you should never bite down on, as doing so can actually break your braces rather easily as well.
Hard Foods To Aviod
Here are a few examples of some harder foods that you should avoid while you are wearing braces, as they can damage or even break the brackets and wires of your braces:
- Nuts (peanuts, cashews, etc.)
- Potato chips
- Beef jerky
- Corn on the cob
- Any type of hard candy
- Hard taco shells
- Bread that contains a hard crust
Sticky foods To Avoid
There are also sticky/gooey types of foods that you should avoid eating while wearing braces as well, as eating these types of foods can cause them to get caught within virtually any portion of your braces. Here are some examples of these kinds of foods:
- Any kind of bubble and/or chewing gum (regular or sugar free)
- Tootsie Rolls
- Any kind of caramel candies
- Any kind of toffee
Any kind of gummy candy (gummy bears, gummy worms, etc.)
In addition to certain foods being avoided, there are also other foods that can be enjoyed, yet should be minimized at the same time (generally one per day).
These types of foods are as follows:
- Ice cream
- Soft candy
If you decide to consume any of the aforementioned foods, it is highly recommended that you always swish your mouth out with water in order to ensure that any excess food is washed away from your braces.
There are also certain beverages that should also not go ignored – most notably beverages that are sugary, diet, or acidic in nature.
These types of drinks should be very limited:
- Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, etc.)
- Energy drinks (Monster, Red Bull, etc.)
- Sweetened tea
- Vitamin water
- Sugary drinks (lemonade, etc.)
If you choose to enjoy any of these types of beverages, never drink any of them before going to bed, as the liquid will actually coat your teeth and tongue with sugar and acid, which can be especially damaging to your braces.
Furthermore, if you do drink any of these beverages, always take the opportunity to rinse out your mouth with water afterward.
